Of the many things I love about Apollo 13 is that even without knowing any of these details, there's vibrant, palpable unity thats felt when reading/watching even surface level recaps. Patriotism, science and optimism coagulated to unify a country to a degree I can't say I've seen since in North America. (I'd say Russia also felt a similar combination around their space programs)
