Matter is etymologically comes from mater (mother) in Latin; which became associated with the word materia, which in Latin was about a thing of physical substance: tangible - like wood (Madera, Madeira) So it became associated with wood. Which then became associate with something of importance - gravity

Then it became more abstract, on the 1200s on it became used as an idea to describe a theme or the important piece of an argument. Matter of fact, matter of course; what is the matter? Proceeding as a natural consequence
