The best part about this (for me) is that Katsu Kokichi was an average samurai in 19th century Japan but his son, Katsu Kaishū was a legendary Meiji Restoration player and helped secure the bloodless transfer of Edo Castle to the Anti shogunate forces and became the father of what eventually was the Japanese Navy

yeah and after listening to the whole thing, I don’t find him mediocre at all! he clearly reflected on his life, documented it well, and handed off the reins to someone more capable / more inclined. he also pioneered “white labeling” of swords for money for a while 😅
