1/ This is going to be one of those “I can’t believe it finally happened to me” threads. It’s long, but there shall be dank memes, so please bear with me. 🧵

First of all -- im sorry this has happened -dealing with this type of stuff is my worst nightmare. Death by a thousand opaque bureaucracy through ToS inevitably feels like a 21st Century modern day "The Trial" If anything, it just seems like the centralized model for "ownership" goes beyond just physical goods, and seeps into digital data. Not owning your data makes you realize you are not even renting "the cloud" you really a serf where things you care about can be taken away from you randomly (though very rarely) but as people keep relying on these services for years, and going on decades -- when these types of events start to happen they will hurt even more.

I thought of your earlier cast while writing this one. My experience over the last 36 hours has largely demolished my counter-argument that there’s value in a license model. It certainly doesn’t work for data in the absence of an escape hatch that credibly guarantees access to your data in a last resort situation
