The ranking system on Farcaster, in its current form, presents a fundamental challenge to fostering meaningful interactions and strengthening a culture of collaboration on the platform. In Farcaster’s early stages, due to the limited number of users and the simplicity of its structure, it was possible to directly interact with prominent users even dear @dwr.eth However, as the network has grown and ranking algorithms have become more complex, the current system has been designed in a way that newer accounts (especially those created in the last six months) are automatically categorized as “spam” or low-effort by default.

This system, seemingly controlled by an algorithm or bot like @botornot, focuses solely on quantitative metrics, such as account age or prior engagement history, instead of evaluating the quality of contributions. As a result, newer accounts, despite having expertise or valuable potential, are relegated to less prominent sections like “Show More” or are entirely ignored. Even when their messages are visible, negative labels like low rankings create a permanent negative record on their digital identity, rendering their efforts to foster meaningful interactions ineffective.

This issue is especially severe for individuals who were early participants in the crypto industry, have achieved significant accomplishments, or made substantial investments in the ecosystem. Despite their ability to offer critical and impactful insights, these users are often sidelined in discussions due to the inefficiencies of the ranking system. Consequently, this system indirectly reduces high-quality participation and demoralizes valuable contributors. The primary problem with the current approach lies in its excessive emphasis on quantitative indicators, while ignoring qualitative factors such as the depth of shared content, the influence of ideas, or the expertise of users. This approach has turned the ranking system into a barrier that hinders innovative voices from being heard, rather than a tool that facilitates meaningful interactions and constructive dialogue.

It is time to design a ranking system that values impact, expertise, and potential rather than just raw numerical metrics.
