On some dimension, competing teams are closer to collaborators then they are competitors. 

Industries are essentially high level memes, and there are many instances of ideas within those memes. 

VCs are basically trying to get exposure to this whole diagram.

Usually an investor picks an interesting industry, category & then the fastest/best horse in the race.

I wouldn’t be surprised to learn about some competitors heavily coordinating behind the scenes.
