Claiming that "users don't care about abstract ideas like decentralization" is a little bit like claiming "users don't care about abstract ideas like property rights or the rule of law"

Only a bit. Property rights and the rule of law have direct and tangible effects on an individual's life. The benefits of decentralization tend to be second or third order and consciously experienced by far fewer folks. I think we're at the point on the arc where we have to care because others don't know they should.

Agreed. But users don’t care about something until they need to. Decentralization is a buzz word until centralization has bad effects for users. Property rights is super valuable when someone is trying to take what is yours.

Facts. I am here because I was sick of providing free content to the big social media companies in exchange for them taking all my data, claiming right over my photography, and then trying to charge me for "premium" services which are just the services they offered for free five years ago.

All it takes is a de-platforming to spark an interest in this. I saw it today where a bunch of people on Twitter were flabbergasted when another user's WhatsApp and Instagram accounts were suddenly suspended by Meta. Responses were: "they can do that??!" Yes, yes they can.

I don't think very many people consciously value property rights or the rule of law either They would be horrified if they went away, but they probably couldn't even tell you what they are if you asked them Same with decentralization - they don't think deeply enough about the implications to care

I think in many cases people are more worried about on-chain safety or blocked by the complexity of self-custody that they would much rather use centralized services than on-chain apps.

Seems like people care as much about decentralisation as they do about their own privacy, or ownership of their own data. I can only assume this is a lack of understanding about consequences, and the possibility for exploitation of trust. Take responsibility for your own data or trust someone else to do so. When explained simply I can't understand why anyone would choose trust over trustless, but they do.

The problem is, that most of the people don't understand the concept of decentralization

That's a great analogy. Just because something is abstract doesn't mean it's not crucial to the user experience and long-term value.
