spirituality can be confusing :-)

what are some simple concepts that make it make sense?

have always liked the Buddhist concept- “don’t worship the finger that points to the moon” ie don’t confuse the teacher with the teaching. And then use common sense & discernment.

is that from a specific text?

Apparently from the  Shurangama Sutra - it’s commonly referenced as “finger pointing at the moon” as an analogy right across Zen & many different types of Buddhist teachings. The moon is a symbol of radiance of pure truth, teachings are just a guidepost. Even Bruce Lee referenced it in one of his movies.
