Day #3 Non-prog prog. There are a handful of artists that I think of as "subversive pop". They use the pop song format as a structure on which to hang sophisticated lyrics, chords, rhythms, and arrangements. Sparks, Joe Jackson, Roxy Music to name a few. And then of course, XTC, who were huge fans of both Mahavishnu Orchestra and New York Dolls. I think this song, "The Smartest Monkeys" is a great example of what I'm talking about even down to the ELP/Genesis style synth solo in the middle. What other "subversive pop" or "progressive pop" did I fail to mention? https://open.spotify.com/track/6Dkz5eZZKW6sBcAA0ezqUO?si=17229e54b6764c97
