keep infra simple, move as much computing as possible on client, vertically scale backend as much as possible before going horizontal

I understand this take except for the preference for vertical scaling. It's so easy to scale horizontally these days and it's quite cost effective. I'm curious where you're coming from?

I think it's easier than not; there's a hundred ways to deploy a docker container and scale it to as many instances as you want. To vertically scale you need to manage the machines yourself.

"it's so easy" until it isn't, that's why

99.9999% of projects you start don't need horizontal scaling (chances are, they don't even need vertical scaling)

don't do preliminary optimization

don't overcomplicate infra without any benefit
