I think the meta changed when Protocol Rewards came out. It started to make sense for most artists to offer free mints, increase the collector base, try to go for scale and monetize via rewards. A lot of artists are stuck on the skeuomorphism of the gallery world, artificial scarcity, etc etc.

I have experienced this myself with Function Over Form. It actually was better to just make the mints free and broaden the user base. Paid mints go untouched.
