If everyone around you often says "we live in a thoroughly X-ist society, it's horrible, and we need to switch to Y which is a refreshing new alternative", consider that you might actually be living in a thoroughly Y-ist society.

I think it's more likely that we're living in an XY-ist society, and the person saying otherwise is having an X-ist experience of society.
