Photo Essay: It was the Fall of 2020, we were in the throws of COVID and the Presidential Campaign of 2020. I had left NYC months before and was hunting for magic in the natural world. I called myself a landscape photographer, yet I had not shot anything that I was in love with. NYC had spoiled me and I was searching for landscapes that filled me with the feels. This image was one of my first shots that started to move the feels needle. As a fly fisherman, I spent so many hours "on the water" and I wanted shots that made me feel like I did while fishing. š§µ1

After sharing the above image one of my Instagram friends Corey, known as @flightlevelfoto (Instagram) suggested I shoot closer to the reflection in the foreground. The following week I am back on the water to shoot the glows and reflections of this pool in the brook. I walk around the brook shooting dozens of images and some long exposures, but the water looks better with ripples and reflections in this comp. I like the painterly vibe. And want the whole frame filled with color and texture. That's me standing in the middle of the stream wearing hip boots and capturing this shot. Second image credit: Taiga Colton š§µ2

My son sat on the rocks watching me doing my thing, while he ate a sandwich. Taiga has been fishing with me since he was a wee man. So we spend a lot of time in places like this together. Today we are fishing for glows. The second image looks upstream with the iPhone 11. Who needs a real camera when you have a smartphone? I realize I love being in the stream with my camera. š§µ3

The finale: I am excited after capturing a great shot and taking my camera off the tripod, disconnecting the remote trigger, and leaving it and the tripod in midstream. I move towards the shore, camera in hand, and slip right before the rocky bank. I'm up to my neck in water and holding the camera above my head My son hesitates to grab it because he wants to record me with his phone. Finally, he grabs my camera saving the day. I knew I brought him for a reason. Now watch this bonus video of Taiga laughing at me being soaked and the gallon of water that comes pouring out of my hip boots.

.āāØ-āØ As a photographer who hasn't taken pictures in awhile I have been waiting for the inspiration to hit me like it did years ago. Searching for something that speaks to my heart and eyes. I guess sometimes you might just have to snap a few pictures to get the engine started before true inspiration find you again. You thread has awakened something in me!
