History

To mark the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the British staged 3 naval battles in London's Hyde Park, including Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. The fleets were composed of scale frigates specially commissioned for the reenactment (compliments of a Napoleonic budget).

The image above is an engraving by an unknown artist published just days after the occasion, depicting the fleets at anchor in the park’s Serpentine River.

The celebration proved premature with Napoleon's brief return to power the following year, which led to a second Treaty of Paris and his (re)exile to a more remote corner of the world.
