I’m about a week away from moving across the country, and find myself reminiscing about so many random east coast things… Last night, I ran into a memory from my childhood in Tennessee when THOUSANDS of cicadas emerged from my yard at the same time… now I’m over here geeking out about these 17yr Cicadas 🤯

Tldr; They’re hidden underground, feasting on roots for 17 years. Then, all together, they bust out of the ground. In just four weeks, they find their mates, get loud, reproduce, and give birth to the next generation. Their tiny offspring return to the earth, patiently awaiting their moment to rise and repeat 🔄

Each brood emerged together in their 17th year the minute the soil reaches the perfect temperature (64°F 👏)
