I used to do consulting, I was telling a few other folks about my learnings: When we engineers scope things we only scope for exactly what we’re looking at which is why we price ourselves short. There’s a lot of other factors to consider when pricing. Over the years I learned that: 1. Increase your price for risk. Is the client hard to deal with? Is their idea likely going to fail and you won’t have another project? I charged premiums if I considered them high risk. If they were easier going or I believed in it, I charged less 2. Scoping. If it’s less than an hour than fine, but if they’re non technical and needs a lot of explaining you need to charge them for your time scoping and explaining things. Less time for written proposals more time for presenting. 3. Opportunity costs. Is there another client that is easier to deal with, make happy and give you more runway? I know it sucks but you do have to keep a pipeline going otherwise you’re hurting yourself and the people who work for you.
