Your favorite songwriter is very unlikely to be a virtuoso. To truly master an instrument in a way that studio and other for-hire musicians must, it is necessary to not be too creative. Creativity gets in the way of acquiring as many skills as possible efficiently.

for sure, "rising force" is the jam - that entire album was actually ("odyssey, 1990-1991 i think?). re-listening to it now reminds me that dragonforce have virtuosity and songcraft coming out the wazoo as well.

but to stay on YM, compare those late 80s/early 90s jams to the work he was doing closer to the 2000's with full out orchestras, where he was performing/interpreting. this stuff is just as iconic. https://music.apple.com/us/album/concerto-suite-for-electric-guitar-and-orchestra-in-e/1510586338
