What age did you start letting your kids play video games? What's the best progression from 0 to building cool stuff in Minecraft?

My son plays exclusively Mario games, 1 hour a week, with us. No exceptions. When he gets older we will phase him into other aspects, but for right now it’s story and character based gaming exclusively. This is excluding any Minecraft education (that’s part of a separate class he takes) nor any games he makes himself in Scratch.
