Plato, through the voice of Socrates in his works, argues that democracy can lead to tyranny because it tends to prioritize freedom and equality to such an extent that it often results in disorder and chaos. In a democracy, the emphasis on individual liberty can lead to a lack of discipline and respect for authority, creating an environment where demagogues can rise to power by exploiting popular desires and emotions. These leaders, who promise to fulfill the people's desires, can gradually accumulate power and erode democratic institutions. Eventually, this concentration of power and the manipulation of public sentiment can transform a democracy into tyranny. Plato believed that without the guidance of knowledgeable and virtuous leaders, the democratic system is vulnerable to this degeneration.
