"Dude" test

This is a simple test for gauging your team environment. When you have a heated argument with someone and it’s clear that they’re being unreasonable, what are the chances that you can just say, “Dude.”  and they’ll respond, “yeah, you’re right, I’m being unreasonable.”

The best people to work with have an exposed button that says, “press me when I’m being unreasonable”.  We’re human.  We get caught up in arguments and we’ve often experienced times when the thrill of winning the argument  prevails over the substance of the argument.

The button functions as a “threat dump” (to borrow a MMORPG term) where it’s a chance to return the argument back to its merits.  It’s a recognition that you both want to solve the problem and that you both have the self-awareness to understand the cheap temptations of emotional rage.
