Finished this, good read. I had the impression that it was a wacky curiosity superseded by better neuroscience, but the brain stuff is the least important part. I agree with this SSC review (which is a great summary). The weaker claim that human minds were weird and different very recently and probably coevolved with language and culture is interesting on its own without getting into consciousness.
