The Science of Can and Can't is the most interesting book I've read this year. It's a pop-sci exposition of the quest to expand the domain of physics to the domain of counterfactuals (things that could be). The author developed constructor theory together with David Deutsch which is a formalization of these ideas.

If you're gonna buy this, it's also worth grabbing The Book of Why by Judea Pearl which is the AI counterpart to this book.

I was thinking how amazing it was that the world contained so many lives. Out in these streets people were embroiled in a thousand matters, money problems, love problems, school problems. People were falling in love, getting married, going to drug rehab, learning how to ice-skate, getting bifocals, studying for exams, trying on clothes, getting their hair cut, and getting born. And in some houses people were getting old and sick and were dying, leaving others to grieve. It was happening all the time, unnoticed, and it was the thing that really mattered. What really mattered in life, what gave it weight, was death.

I think everyone needs to read this book to get a grip on how their own and others' personalities are shaped Just don’t spill the beans to anyone, so you can secretly use it to your advantage in your relationships 🤫😁

No, I didn’t know what was going to happen. But the present was simply sweet. It’s enough, I thought. The anchors were raised, the sails hoisted—so just for now I could take in the beauty of the waves and sky and be happy. That was allowed.
