In the 17th century, French courtiers grew their nails, but not on all their fingers, only on the little finger. Knocking loudly on the door of the king's chambers was considered a sign of bad manners, and scratching it with a nail was considered a norm of decency. One can only guess how long the well-mannered and gallant Frenchmen stood at the door. But the fact remains: etiquette is a complicated thing.
