Progressive decentralisation of identity on ENS:

Onboard your users in the easiest way possible with the best UX by giving them a username using EIP-3668 and ENS wildcard for 0 gas cost. Then allow your users to switch to their own ENS or allow them to mint their username on L2.

Their fname can be changed in the future if the user already has an ENS name (and most current farcaster users do) by signing a tx with the Ethereum account that the name resolves to. This allows them to use their original identity on farcaster.

With future standardisation, the protocol or application can also introduce a third tier, which allows a user to take their permissioned username, e.g off-chain fnames that are mintable on L1 or L2 to take full control and ownership. This could be paid for or for free (+gas)

This would allow for the full spectrum of options to ultimately improve onboarding but preserve decentralisation and sovereignty for the users that care about this.

An example of this is farcaster’s fname system. They allow all users to first create an EIP-3668 powered ENS subname that is permissioned by a farcaster server. This allows for easy onboarding with a name that represents them without forcing the new user to do an onchain tx
