It was originally built around 1858 by Manhattan financier Paul Armour for his family, but at the time with a flat roof which was in the style of other octagonal homes built across the US in the second half of the 19th century. In 1872 the home was purchased by prominent tea merchant Joseph Stiner who added the two-story dome that comprised the 3rd & 4th floors. The home was purchased in 1978 by architect Joseph Pell Lombardi who meticulously restored it. Now a National Historic Landmqrk, it is open to the public for select tours throughout the year (part 5)
