the u.s. is turning into russia - state led by de-facto dictator and oligarch cronies - state-encouraged cultural conservatism and jingoistic nationalism - economy propped up by massive defense spending - promises to repress and suppress political opponents and media critics etc, etc. so not full handsmaid's tale, but more of a tacky, fascist-lite, crony state
