BMW was founded by Karl Rapp, Franz Josef Popp, and Camillo Castiglioni in 1916. It was initially named Rapp Motorenwerke, but was later renamed Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) in 1922. The company started as a manufacturer of aircraft engines, but later shifted to producing motorcycles and automobiles.
