Ive read a few of these and discussed this with @zachharris.eth Thing is we’ve got a quasi-7x7 island, so logically it’s pretty easy to put a lid on things. Even when things were “bad” it was mostly just fashionable to gripe about crime. Nothing is ever as bad as people enjoy saying whether it is on price, traffic, crime, whatever

Many instances of post covid misperception based on constructed narratives vs first hand accounts. The shift to fully remote for many I think compounded this warped perception of reality. Ex. When I left NYC, there was so much looting and lawlessness. I remember countless businesses shuttered in Midtown and portable morgues lining the FDR. It was grim. But NYC is back. And you have to see it and feel it and experience it to believe it. I’m fearful people have traded real dopamine for synthetic dopamine in the pursuit of convenience.

There was a marc andreessen clip at one point about all his friends that stayed in SF during covid did so subconsciously because they like to complain about it. I agree with you and him, but it was actually terrible for a while. There are still issues... for example a few weeks ago someone got shot at near me, outside the argonaut in fisherman's wharf. But it's getting better.
