Tarkovsky depicts nature simply, in the form of a "flow" that "absorbs the human gaze", but "sometimes returns his gaze to itself"; It is as if a cold, dark and ancient divinity resides in the world; Monstrous and devastatingly indifferent to humanity. In the first shots of Solaris, despite all the colors and textures and the endless play of light in the flowing water, there is no consolation. All is sadness.
