Salar de Uyuni - the Bolovian Salt Flats - was a bucket list destination that did NOT disappoint. i rate it 7/10 difficulty getting there and 10/10 vibes. you fly to La Paz and take a tiny plane or overnight bus to Uyuni. you negotiate a deal with a local vendor to drive you to the flats in an old 4x4. you can pay for a private tour, but most likely you'll be joined by other travelers, and your guide will speak very little english. he's also probably drunk. you drive for hours on blankets of white. your eyes won't believe what they're seeing. nothing but salt flats for miles on end. it's disorienting. you *might* get lucky and see both wet & dry terrain (we did; rare) you overnight in the middle of nowhere under the darkest, starriest sky you'll ever behold. the next day you drive for hours again. you may encounter angry locals extorting visitors for ransom (we did; not rare) you finally pop out 250 miles later in san pedro de atacama, a charming town in northern chile. you are changed forever.
