"is there something in psychology where people who got duped by sociopaths try to be like 'well he was still a really nice guy' once it's revealed they got duped by a sociopath?"

People tend to stick with decisions they’ve already made—especially if those decisions were public. This bias is well-documented in psychology. Once someone publicly defends or trusts a person, it's mentally uncomfortable to reverse that stance. Also, humans are more easily influenced by people they like—especially those who are attractive, charismatic, or friendly. If someone seems nice or made them feel good, they’re more likely to excuse bad behavior later. Effective salespeople use these exact techniques—winning trust through charm, securing small commitments, and creating rapport. Once you've said “yes” or endorsed someone, you're more likely to keep justifying that stance, even in the face of contrary evidence.
