Peruvian strongman Alberto Fujimori's death leaves divisive legacy The controversial former Peruvian president, Alberto Fujimori has died aged 86. To his supporters, Fujimori was the president who saved Peru from the twin evils of terrorism and economic collapse. To his opponents, he was an authoritarian strongman who rode roughshod over the country's democratic institutions to preserve his hold on power. In 2009, he was sentenced to 25 years in jail for human rights abuses committed during his time in office - including authorising killings carried out by death squads - but he was released from prison in December after a pardon on humanitarian grounds was reinstated.
