15 years ago I created a space battle game played entirely with SQL. Top players have written more code to play it than I did to make it. It's never going to be a household name but it was a really fun experiment in encouraged botting. 

It also taught a lot of people SQL

Educational games are a lot of fun to build and rewarding in their own way. Not necessarily monetarily but, even beoynd getting to teach others, the amount of well-meaning feedback and unsolicited contributions you receive can be really surprising
