The event is called Thesis Dance, celebrating its 10th anniversary in Tampa, Florida, from January 9th to 12th. It brought together culture and breaking through showcases, workshops, and battles. Out of 56 competitors, only three were women, and I was the only one to make it to the top 8. In the segment format, where competitors battle for points, I came just two points short of winning, finishing in second place against an all-male lineup.
What I love most about traveling to these events is how people always ask about my glasses. I enjoy explaining that they’re called Noggles and that they represent Nouns, our team of breakers from different parts of Latin America in the U.S. Together, we proudly showcase unity, culture, and breaking. Events like Tessie’s Dance show how breaking connects diverse communities while breaking barriers, like being the only woman in the finals. 1 reply
