The President of the Central African Republic, Faustin-Archange Touadera, announced on the social network X the launch of a meme token called CAR. Its market capitalization approached $900 million in a matter of hours, although users suspect hacking.

Touadera is a proponent of cryptocurrencies and called the launch of the coin an "experiment." A number of services have marked the video announcement as generated by AI.

The project also created a separate account, but the X moderators suspended the account. In a separate post, the president stated that they were working with the platform to regain access to it.
