This week I built hope. Every day, I push myself to keep going, to believe that I’ll survive this forced immigration and find my way back home to my dog Vanya. He’s an old dog, and every morning I thank him for waiting for me, for still being there, even when I can’t be. Every night, I pray that he’ll hold on—that he’ll wait until this war is over and we can be together again. This week I built HOPE.

I had a dog friend that looked like this. I say friend because I didn’t own this dog he was someone else’s. He would meet me at the bus stop when I was little and walk me home. Eventually the owner came to talk to me said he didn’t know why but his dog had a bond with me. I was 6-7. I believe he was a spirit guide, a protector. I hope your Vanya is staying strong for you.

Did you see him for the last time in early childhood?

One day he just quit coming to the bus stop and some kids said they saw him around town. The owner couldn’t find him. Was sad. It was so cute. He would be sitting at the stop. All the kids thought he was mine. My birth mom was an addict and has some scary fiends. Always felt safe with the fluffy dog around.
