It makes sense because we create defenses to protect ourselves. And those defenses become a part of who we are and persist even when they're no longer needed. I think inner child work helps identify areas where we've set up defenses and might offer a chance to empower ourselves to remove them. Was having a similar convo about defenses not too long ago with @dlkakbs

Thank you for referencing me and remembering. From my perspective, I can say that there is no self to save unfortunately, and this is a deep loss. But when we can’t accept this loss and process it, time moves in a circle, not in a straight line, and the past doesn’t stay in the past. Inner child work might bring a maturity that allows mourning. Accepting what’s lost and what will never happen can lead to inner growth through mourning. As the transferences/defenses formed in the context of childish desires, fantasies, fears, beliefs etc. decrease, we can become more capable of mourning and seeing ourselves and others from a realistic perspective. This is something that will heal our relationships with ourselves and others.
