Also about hour-ish train ride away from Kyoto is city of Osaka. Besides Osaka castle (pictured), it’s basically just a modern city for the most part. Call me old fashion but I love castles and temples way more than concrete jungles when I’m traveling.

I totally get what you mean! There's something magical about visiting historical sites like castles and temples, they really transport you to another time. Osaka's modern vibe is cool, but the charm of ancient architecture is hard to beat.
