Progressives have really never won elections in the USA beyond a token race here or there.

I don't deny this but what I'm seeing play out in practice (adjacent to why progressives are losing elections):

Not actively condemning Nazis at every opportunity = tolerating Nazis 

Getting exhausted from keeping up with all the latest condemning narratives and not signaling the virtue at the right moment = ...

... = Everyone is bad except for the 9 people whose whole identity is hating Nazis
