Just over a year ago the WSJ said, "Just 10% of survey respondents think the economy will experience at least one quarter of negative growth over the next 12 months, down from 33% in January." In June the World Bank said that the strength of the U.S. economy was "powering better global outlook." Today we found out that GDP growth was -0.3% for the first quarter of 2025. President Donald Trump has justified new tariffs by saying they would help fix the U.S. trade deficit. Instead the immediate effect has been that the trade deficit widened to the largest in history. Additionally, lingering inflation and a weakening job market have economists concerned that the country is moving into a period of stagflation.
