I could see this ending up going to SCOTUS. If you are going to do this sort of thing then you have to provide IDs free of charge. Simple as that. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/judge-blocks-trump-administration-requiring-proof-citizenship-register/story?id=121134512

As someone who volunteers to work elections, I am curious why this is even an issue. I live in a blue state and in a town where most recent elections are 50/50 or lean blue. We do ask for id, but it can be anything from a license, a credit card, a library card (the reason being they proved their identity when they registered) The overwhelming majority of people show their id and thank us for asking for it. I actually think that the excuse that asking for id hurts minorities is so racist, as do many of the minorities that come through my precinct to vote.

Idk, Republicans want to disenfranchise and suppress as many people as possible by whatever means possible.

Again, please explain how this disenfranchises or suppresses anyone.

If you need proof of ID or citizenship to allow someone to vote then you have to have a program that supplies the needed documents for people for free. If you charge $75 for someone to get a document then you are disenfranchising the poor.

The cost is between $0 and $50 and lasts several years, with many waivers available. if you’re poor enough to receive benefits, you are given an id card. Most others have the $ to get a card.

Just pay for everyone to be provided a piece of documentation for free and then it's no longer an issue. Simple as that.

That's a cheap solution for those born in the USA.

If you have become a citizen sometime after birth you have papers you were given upon becoming a citizen. Most people know exactly where theirs are, may actually be easier to access than a birth certificate if you’ve moved from your birth city. But again, with rights are responsibilities, and proving you’re a citizen is one of them.

So we should remove all safeguards for a free and fair election because homeless people may not be able to keep track of id. Should we do this for driver licenses? Those aren’t free and are required to prove you are a legal driver.

All safeguards aren't being removed. There is only 1 state that currently requires proof of citizenship. Voting fraud is extremely extremely low. And a driver's license/driving is a very bad comparison, especially when we are talking about poor people. 1) Poor people can't afford cars 2) Driving is not a right guaranteed by the constitution

That is really the only safeguard there is when someone shows up to vote. I didn’t say to buy a car, I said a license to drive. You don’t have to own a car to drive. There are many rights in the Constitution that legislators have put limits on, the right to bear arms, assembly, even free speech. Btw, I’m enjoying this conversation, I hope you are too.

How many very poor people do you know that have a driver's license? You know a driver's license costs money too, right? And telling people they have to prove citizenship to vote without giving them the documents needed is not "putting limits" on the right it is completely eliminating it.
