tldr there are different types of oil, the us extracts light 'sweet' crude but a lot of refineries here are built for heavier dirty stuff so we export the good oil for more money and import the heavier stuff. these refineries then dump and pollute where the poors live and dodge a lot of externality costs associated with burning the earth wait what were we talking about again i got sidetracked 🤣  fracking is also super fun
