Jupiter and Io is a painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Antonio da Correggio, completed around 1530. The work belongs to the series of paintings "Jupiter's Lovers", consisting of four canvases. Jupiter often resorted to various disguises to hide his adventures from his jealous wife. This time he wraps himself in a dark cloud, although it is bright daylight outside. Jupiter embraces the nymph, his face barely visible next to her head. Io pulls Jupiter's smoky hand towards herself with barely restrained sensuality. The contrast between the disembodied figure of Jupiter and the nymph, blazing with vitality, is clearly visible. In creating Io's curved pose, depicted from behind, Correggio was inspired by ancient prototypes, skillfully transformed to create one of the most virtuosic images in 16th-century painting. In the lower right corner, the head of a deer drinking from a stream is visible, possibly introducing Christian themes into the subject.
