James Naismith (born November 6, 1861, died November 28, 1939) was a Canadian physician, physical education teacher, pastor, sports coach, and inventor. He invented the sport of basketball for the first time in 1891 and then single-handedly wrote the first basketball rule book and founded the basketball program at the University of Kansas. Naismith lived long enough to witness the globalization of this sport and its participation in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin and the birth of the National Collegiate Basketball Championship and of course the Men's Division I Basketball Championship (NCAA) in 1939.
