The Red Mound at Hierakonpolis, located in Aswan, southern Egypt, is one of Egypt's most significant archaeological sites, offering clear evidence of the origins of ancient Egyptian civilization. Known as "Nekhen" in antiquity, Hierakonpolis was the ancient capital of southern Egypt, making it arguably Egypt's oldest capital, dating back approximately 7,000 years. It served as a crucial religious and political center before Egypt's unification. Excavations reveal palaces, temples, and royal tombs from the pre-dynastic era, indicating a sophisticated governance system thousands of years ago. The site also showcases early advancements in architecture and social organization, making it key to understanding the rise of Egyptian civilization. Named "Hierakonpolis" (City of the Falcon) by the Greeks, it reflects its religious importance tied to the god Horus. Visiting the Red Mound is a journey to the roots of one of history's oldest civilizations.
