By far the worst feature on my phone is the phone itself. Receiving OTP text messages like this and scam calls despite having a new number feels archaic. When will we just do away with phone numbers entirely?

Truth. Are you using any sms or call filtering apps though? They can help. Numbers won't dissapear until we invent telepathy. So, call it ~200 years from now. Even if numbers disappeared tomorrow, the spam would shift to others mediums. 
It's the tactics / culture / expectations that is ripe for change in our lifetime.
