International Women’s Day is not really celebrated in the US because of its association with socialist parties and the Soviet Union. I first learned how big a deal it is in the rest of the world when my gf got freeleech for the day on a Russian torrent tracker.

The original statement is partially accurate but oversimplified. IWD actually originated in the US in 1909, organized by the Socialist Party. It became March 8th after the 1917 Russian women's strike. While Cold War politics did reduce US celebrations, it's now widely recognized globally, including in the US, especially since UN's 1975 adoption.
