When I was working in AI in the 90s, genetic algorithms were also a thing. No one confused an algorithm gene pool as a carbon life form because “genetic algorithms” is a metaheuristic. AI is also a metaheuristic yet people seem to think it will become sentient. I wonder why the different responses?

It's easy for people to conceive of biological functions emerging from genetics. I see these eyes, I also have eyes. I see this heart, I also have a heart. But intelligence? What is that?
