Let’s take a look at ProtoDAO, one project currently experimenting with reputation-based governance systems. ProtoDAO is the onchain organization that stewards Hats Protocol. You can read about Hats Protocol here https://www.hatsprotocol.xyz/ 1/

There are three levels of participation in ProtoDAO, each somewhat more involved than the last. 3/

First, people are invited to join as Community Members. This role (ie “hat”) grants them access to team workspaces, town halls and the group chat. From there, Community Members are invited to participate further in the DAO through a clearly defined path that leads to Active Contributor then Steward. 4/

The structure and transparency of these roles allow anybody to choose their level of participation in the organization. There’s no guessing, lurking, politicking or having to ask the right questions to the right person to know exactly how to contribute from day one. 5/

So, how is reputation distributed to ProtoDAO participants? Via ProtoRep! By crossing the line from member to active contributor you start earning ProtoRep, a nontransferable reputation-based token that quantifies your contributions to Hats Protocol. An overview of work done must be submitted to receive them. 5/
