I've never understood why teams run with 2 goalies...  

Seems like it would keep both of them on-edge.

What am I missing?

I meant why 2 instead of 1.  

I get having a backup, but don’t get the split starters.  Like starting 2 qbs in football. 

I’d think it makes sense to have 1 starter who is better and paid more, and a backup who could fill in if needed in off chance of injury.

Like why have two instead of just one?  Because if one gets injured or sucks the other one can take over.  If you mean 2 intead of like 5, its because its rare you'd ever need more than 2.  Since 2016 out of like 656+ games there have only been 6 times they've used an emergency goalie.
